Love Is Not a Breadcrumb

In a world where love is often confused with fleeting interactions, it's refreshing to dive into the Bible's definition of love. The world often equates love with physical intimacy, acceptance of minimal effort, and feeding the heart with crumbs. However, this shallow definition leads to broken hearts and confused minds. True love is not just a feeling, but a deliberate choice to prioritize the other person's well-being.

The book of Hosea provides a profound example of unconditional love. Despite Gomer's infidelity and rejection, Hosea consistently chose to love and forgive her. This love was not based on Gomer's actions, but on Hosea's commitment to God and his wife. Similarly, God's love for us is not based on our performance, but on His character. In Hosea 3:1, we see Hosea's love for Gomer as a picture of God's love for us - a love that is steadfast, loyal, and unconditional.

Love is not about feeding someone's desires with minimal effort. It's not about keeping someone's hopes up with empty promises. True love is consistent, clear, and chooses the other person's best interest. It's about giving the whole menu, not just breadcrumbs. As 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reminds us, love is patient, kind, and not easily angered. It's a love that rejoices in truth and protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres.

God's love for us is the perfect example of this. He sent His only Son to pay for our sins, proving His love with the blood that ran down on the cross at Calvary (John 3:16). Why, then, do we struggle to love others in the same way? It's because we often choose to prioritize our own desires and interests over others. We choose to "feel" good instead of being good.

In a world that's starving for true love, let's not confuse attention with love. Let's not settle for breadcrumbs when we can have the whole menu. Let us choose to love unconditionally, sacrificially, and consistently, reflecting God's love to a world in need.
