The Potholes After the Storm.

For the past two days, we have received a tremendous amount of rain. The skies were dark, thunder echoed through the clouds, and the downpour seemed endless. Roads flooded, vehicles became stranded, and for a moment, it felt as though the storm would never pass.

Today, however, the sun is shining. The birds are singing. The skies are clear. Everything appears calm and beautiful once again.

As I drove to work this morning, I noticed something that caught my attention. Although the storm had passed, the roads still bore the evidence of what they had endured. In several places, large potholes had formed where the asphalt once seemed strong and unbreakable.

It made me stop and think.

We often look at roads and see strength. They are built with concrete and asphalt, designed to withstand heavy traffic, scorching heat, and daily wear. Yet after just a few days of relentless rain, the damage became visible.

The water exposed weaknesses that were hidden beneath the surface.

And isn’t that often true of our lives?

Many of us appear strong on the outside. We walk with confidence. We continue working, serving, praying, and carrying our responsibilities. We tell ourselves we are okay. Yet when the storms of life arrive—financial hardship, heartbreak, loneliness, disappointment, loss, or uncertainty—the pressure begins to reveal what lies beneath the surface.

Sometimes the storms leave potholes in our hearts.

Scars from painful experiences.

Wounds from betrayal.

Fear from past failures.

Anxiety from difficult seasons.

Even when the storm passes and the sun begins to shine again, the evidence remains.

But there is something else that stood out to me.

The same water that damaged the road is also the very thing that brings life. Water nourishes the earth, sustains creation, and cleanses what is dirty. Without water, nothing grows.

The difference is not the water.

The difference is what the water encounters.

Likewise, God often uses the storms we wish to avoid to reveal areas within us that need healing, strengthening, and restoration. The storm does not always come to destroy us. Sometimes it comes to expose what has been hidden so that God can repair it.

The potholes in the road are not the end of the story. They are simply signs that maintenance and restoration are needed.

The same is true for us.

If the storms of life have left scars in your heart, do not be discouraged. Bring those broken places before the Lord. He is the Master Builder, the One who restores what has been damaged and strengthens what has become weak.

The storm may have left its mark, but God’s grace is greater than any damage it could ever cause.

And just as the sun shines again after the rain, God’s faithfulness remains after every storm.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3
